AMERICAN WAX

CULTURAL Archeology

Directors, Cultural Icons & THE TOPPS LEGACY

The inaugural AMERICAN WAX release focuses on a defining period of American cinema and mass-market image culture spanning the 1960s through to the late 1980s.

Each work originates from original wax-paper trading card packaging produced during the era of peak theatrical merchandising, when film imagery moved beyond the cinema screen and into supermarkets, newsagents and everyday circulation.

The release pairs large-scale AMERICAN WAX works with authenticated signatures from individuals intrinsically tied to the cultural identity of the original property. These signatures are not intended as celebrity endorsements.
Each signatory has been selected because of their direct relationship to the authorship, identity, memory or mythology associated with the work itself. In some cases the connection is one of authorship. In others it is performance, stewardship or cultural association. Together they reflect the different ways mythology is created, transmitted and remembered.
